If you’re after a more realistic TV-style presentation, it’s also possible to disable the player indicators. This includes overlays and the scoreboard, which you might want to remove in order to feel like you’re watching the game from the stands rather than on TV. However, one of the more interesting and fun uses of the dev console is the ability to enable and disable various visual elements. It can also be used to manually perform functions such as taking a screenshot or exiting the game. As you’d expect, there are the standard debugging and troubleshooting functions, including the ability to display information such as the current frame rate. Similarly, typing varlist will display a list of all the variables for an easy reference on what can be manipulated by entering different values. As such, typing in cmdlist will display a list of all the commands that can be entered into the console. Of course, no one is going to automatically know what all the valid commands are, and even the developers probably needed a reference to be readily available. Once we open up the dev console in NBA Live 2003, we’re able to manipulate the game with a variety of commands. This enabled the console to be opened using the tilde key, a common keyboard binding that a lot of games with a debug interface use. After opening the file in an application such as Notepad, we had to find the line // bind +K_TILDE CONSOLE, and remove the preceding forward slashes. Gaining access to the console command line required a config file to be edited, specifically xstartup.cfg, located in the cscripts folder. One might argue that there’s less use for the functionality when it comes to the virtual hardwood, but there are still a couple of nifty things that were possible with the dev console in NBA Live 2003. While the presence of a developer/debug console isn’t unusual in other types of video games, they don’t appear all that often in basketball titles. One interesting feature that we found but didn’t really utilise all that often was the dev console in NBA Live 2003. In the process, we discovered a lot of hidden content and features.
Even when certain games fell short of our expectations, we’d do all we could to enhance them with mods. If nothing else, there was so much that our modding community could do with it.
